Impacts of Seagrass on Benthic Microalgae and Phytoplankton Communities in an Experimentally Warmed Coral Reef Mesocosm

چکیده

The effects of seagrass on microalgal assemblages under experimentally elevated temperatures (28°C) and CO 2 partial pressures (pCO ; 800 μatm) were examined using coral reef mesocosms. Concentrations nitrate, ammonium, benthic chlorophyll a (chl-a) significantly higher in mesocosms, whereas phytoplankton chl-a concentrations similar between seagrass-free control In the group, fewer parasitic dinoflagellate OTUs (e.g., Syndiniales) found community though more symbiotic dinoflagellates Cladocopium spp.) quantified community. Our results suggest that, ocean acidification conditions, presence nearby reefs may (1) enhance primary productivity, (2) decrease abundance, (3) possibly increase dinoflagellates.

Fish-derived nutrient hotspots shape coral reef benthic communities.

Animal-derived nutrients play an important role in structuring nutrient regimes within and between ecosystems. When animals undergo repetitive, aggregating behavior through time, they can create nutrient hotspots where rates of biogeochemical activity are higher than those found in the surrounding environment. In turn, these hotspots can influence ecosystem processes and community structure. We...

Prediction of Bleaching in Coral Reef Communities Using a Temperature Index(Southern and northern Persian Gulf)

Sea surface temperature is one of the most effective physical parameters that affects the health of coral reefs communities.High frequency of the bleaching phenomenon has extensively occurred in the Persian Gulf in the recent years due to the increase in temperature and increased changes in the sea surface temperature (SST) resulting in great mortality in the coral communities. The aim of this ...

Distribution of coral reef fishes along a coral reef–seagrass gradient: edge effects and habitat segregation

Coral reefs and seagrass beds are often located adjacent to one another, but little is known about the degree to which their fish communities are interlinked. To determine whether coral reef fishes on the coral reef are interlinked with or segregated from fishes on adjacent seagrass beds, a 60 m coral reef–seagrass gradient was studied on the island of Zanzibar in the western Indian Ocean. Usin...

Influence of live coral cover on coral-reef fish communities

The effect of percentage live coral cover on the number of fish species and individuals was determined by censusing fish from a series of reefs of comparable structural complexity, but with different proportions of live coral, in the lagoon of Mataiva Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago. Regression analysis showed that there was a highly significant (p < 0.001) positive relationship between live coral c...

Variable Responses of Benthic Communities to Anomalously Warm Sea Temperatures on a High-Latitude Coral Reef

High-latitude reefs support unique ecological communities occurring at the biogeographic boundaries between tropical and temperate marine ecosystems. Due to their lower ambient temperatures, they are regarded as potential refugia for tropical species shifting poleward due to rising sea temperatures. However, acute warming events can cause rapid shifts in the composition of high-latitude reef co...
